About Montana Master Gardener Program through Montana State University Extension Service.
Montana Master Gardener cover
Description The Montana Master Gardener Program through the Montana State University Extension Service offers 3 levels of yard and garden education. Level 1 Master Gardeners learn the basics of soils, plant growth and development, growing food, trees, shrubs, flowers, lawns, irrigation, composting and pest management. Level 2 offers more in depth gardening topics taught by local specialists, Extension agents, and volunteers. Level 3 is a hands-on, interactive 3-day course hosted by the Extension Service on the campus of Montana State University. All levels require a volunteer commitment and upon completion participants receive a certification and the title, Montana Master Gardener.

The Master Gardener Program was first started by the Washington State Cooperative Extension Service in 1972. It grew out of a need to meet an enormous increase in requests from home gardeners for horticultural information. Master Gardeners have become a vital part of Extension’s ability to provide consumers with up-to-date reliable information. Master Gardening has also given its participants a sense of community spirit, accomplishment and intellectual stimulation.
