My Invisible Life is a NFP/Social Enterprise collaborative blog.
My Invisible Life is an aggregator of community stories about ALL illness. There are many stories posted online about people’s experiences living with illness, however they are usually posted within the boundaries of their own illness community. MIL brings allthese stories and storytellers together in one place – those who live directly with illness, family and friends of those affected, as well as the broader community.
Together people can learn about different lives, come to appreciate their own, be inspired by the journeys of others and together grow the community consciousness of illness. Once the audience is established, the business model for MIL will involved targeted contextually-relevant advertising, and as the community grows, different opportunities for income generation will evolve in relation to products and service offerings.
Admin costs will always be kept as low as possible and a volunteer base of editors and social community engagement coordinators will be established. Donations from income generated by the site will be made monthly to the charity voted most popular in terms of engagement levels of the site. Storytellers will also have the opportunity to promote a chosen charity directly by linking to them at the bottom of their stories.
Illness, whether it be terminal or mild is invisible to the everyday person. It is a life, equal to any other that many don’t understand or appreciate. You might reasonably ask – why should you be expected to understand or appreciate the life led by a person with a chronic illness?
It’s because with understanding comes respect and true empathy – two emotions that bind out humanity and our sense of community. Not only do we need genuine empathy and respect for people with chronic illness but many of those that don’t have a condition want to understand, if only to appreciate life and its daily ups and downs for what they are in the larger scheme of things.
It takes a relationship with another person to help us learn. This is the foundation of MyInvisibleLife – to connect people through honest and authentic storytelling. It is designed to be soothing to contribute to, entertaining and inviting to engage with, anonymous if you choose, honest, authentic and respectful of all.
MIL is a profit for purpose business model, where charities and NFP that support a chronic illness will always advertise for free and where profits made each quarter are donated to a worthwhile charity. You can become a MIL storyteller today. Share with us your invisible life because though you live it every day, others don’t. You can share your experiences and help others understand and help grow community understanding.
I was inspired to start My Invisible Life in honour of my friend Em who has Motor Neurone Disease.
