The NOAA Satellite & Information Service (referred to as NESDIS) is a line office under the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
The National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) is dedicated to providing timely access to global environmental data from satellites and other sources to promote, protect, and enhance the Nation’s (United States) economy, security, environment, and quality of life.
NESDIS manages NOAA's constellation of environmental satellites and their subsequent data.
NOAA’s satellites provide a continuous stream of data and information critical for making environmental response decisions. NOAA, in collaboration with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the U.S. Air Force, manages and operates a fleet of environmental monitoring satellites. NESDIS currently operates 17 satellites from the NOAA Satellite Operations Facility in Suitland, MD.
NESDIS also maintains the NOAA Data Centers: The National Climatic Data Center, Asheville, NC; the National Geophysical Data Center, Boulder, CO; and the National Oceanographic Data Center, Silver Spring, MD.
