|About||The mission of North Florida Soaring Society (NFSS) is to promote the sport of soaring both locally and nationally through the provision of safe flying, as well as facilities, equipment, education and training for its members on a not-for-profit basis.|
Membership in North Florida Soaring Society is open to anyone with the desire to learn and enjoy the art and technique of soaring.
The Jacksonville, FL area has excellent thermal activity (rising columns of air, usually under cumulus clouds) for soaring. It is not uncommon for club members to reach 8,000+ feet altitude.
NFSS has very reasonable rates and fees which are considered some of the lowest in the country.
NFSS is located approximately 8 miles southwest of downtown Jacksonville, Florida. We offer year-round soaring every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Herlong Airport (HEG), located 2 miles west of I-295 on Normandy Blvd.
NFSS currently offers the following four sailplanes and one towplane for use by our members:
● Piper PA-25 Pawnee - Tow plane
● LET L-23 Super Blanik - Two-seat glider
● Schweizer SGS 2-33 - Two-seat training glider
● Schweizer SGS 1-26 - Single-seat glider
● Pilatus B-4 - Single-seat glider
