PROMO is Missouri's statewide organization advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender equality through legislative action, electoral politics, grassroots organizing, and community education.
Organizational goals: We identify LGBT rights supporters, educate them on the issues, give them the tools and the confidence to participate in the political process, and get results. PROMO's goals are to help LGBT Missourians create a supportive and visible community, become active in the democratic process, and work for their equal protection under the law. We build community awareness and grassroots support for LGBT equality and increase civic participation of LGBT Missourians.
Organizational vision: The board, staff, and members of PROMO believe that our legislative and electoral work, along with PROMO FUND's community education and grassroots organizing efforts will not only succeed in making legislative changes that eliminate legal sanctions against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community; but will also reduce ignorance of and animosity toward LGBT individuals. A shift in the Missouri laws, from a system flawed with fundamental injustices to one that truly embraces the concept of equality for all citizens, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity will put us one step closer to a society where all voices are heard and all people are free. PROMO is dedicated to the belief that equality and personal liberty can be a reality through ongoing, systematic grassroots community organizing and we will continue to strive toward that vision, one step at a time.
Current legislative action:
Missouri Nondiscrimination Act
The Missouri Nondiscrimination Act (MONA) would simply extend the existing Missouri Human Rights Statue to include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) and straight people.
Missouri Safe Schools Legislation
Our proposed Safe Schools legislation provides protection from bullying and discrimination for Missouri students based on actual or perceived characteristics, such as race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or a mental, physical or sensory disability, or on the basis of association with others identified by these categories.
