RAF Leeming is situated right on the A1 so that allows easy access to north and southbound travellers and also the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales. To the north, Newcastle is an hour away and Darlington, approx 35 mins, to the south; Harrogate is approx 40 mins and York around 50 mins. To the east, Whitby is an hours drive and Scarborough a little further, to the west, Penrith is an hour away allowing access to the Lake District
The role of RAF Leeming is to train for, deliver and support UK and expeditionary air operations
Main units within RAF Leeming are:
90SU - supporting airpower through the delivery of assured information and communication services
100 Sqn - provides operationally ready training and support to the frontline forces of today and the Weapon Systems Officers of tomorrow
JFACTSU - provides training to successfully integrate Close Air Support into a dynamic battle space
34 Sqn RAF Regiment
2FP Wg -provides general protection of RAF Forces
10 Fd Sqn RE - providing air support and general engineering to national, coalition or NATO forces
609(WR)Sqn - provide trained personnel to augment and support the RAF through prolonged operations
Northumbria University Air Squadron (NUAS) - provides flying training on the Grob tutor to students
Leeming is the nearest village and has a small shop and Post Office. The nearest market town is Bedale, situated 5 miles away. It has a quaint town centre with various pubs and restaurants, a leisure centre with swimming pool and fitness suite, banks, library, dentist, Post Office, secondary school, a non-vocational college, supermarket and vets.
The popular market town of Northallerton is 13 miles away with a larger selection of shops and supermarkets, job centre, a 6th Form College and car dealers. Northallerton is the nearest railway station to RAF Leeming.
