|About||Renaissance Soil is a St. Paul, MN-based nonprofit that promotes soil health through education, outreach, and action! We want to build a thriving ecosystem starting in the soil by connecting people with the underground!|
Renaissance Soil operates under the foundational belief that access to healthy food, clean water, and an intact ecosystem is the most basic and important right of all species.
Significantly, it is also the right most threatened and diminished in our industrialized world. To remedy this, Renaissance Soil employs extremely low impact and sustainable yard and garden maintenance practices to strengthen communities and secure this essential right.
Our goals are to:
Support Soil Life
Industrial waste, concrete, lawn/garden chemicals, and a barrage of other toxic substances and damaging practices have greatly diminished the vitality of our soils. Soil is alive! It is the combination of rock and mineral matter with a vast array of microscopic and visible creatures. These creatures are responsible for everything from water infiltration to plant health. We focus on soil life because it is literally the foundation of everything else!
Our gardens are havens for beneficial insects like bees and other pollinators as well as birds and many wild species displaced by urban development and chemical-intensive lawn and farm maintenance.
Restore the Commons
Ideally, we would like to create a network of lawns that provide food, habitat, and wellness year-round to not only your family, but to the surrounding community as well.
Secure Access to Food
Global climate change, diminishing fossil fuel resources, and unsustainable agricultural practices are three huge threats to our food system (and our health): use your lawn to secure access to clean, healthy food.
Current practices take invaluable water resources away from your property, down the street, and straight into our lakes and rivers. Our gardens focus on water conservation and retention as a primary goal.
