|About||The Sea Star Foundation is a non-profit organization that aims to provide preventative dental care to children and adults in third world countries.|
|Mission||The purpose of this foundation is to purchase portable dental equipment, dental supplies, and to fund mission projects for dental treatment for people in third world countries.|
The purpose of the Sea Star Foundation is to be a resource for informing dental clinicians of reputable dental missions and non-profit organizations that put on mission projects for dental treatment of people in third world countries.
How We Began:
The Sea Star Foundation began after a group of Dental Hygienists participating in short term dental mission projects saw the tremendous dental needs of people in Third World Countries.
Less than 3% of people in developing countries have access to regular dental care. Lack of regular dental care results in high levels of extensive decay leading to abscesses and fistulas. By the time dental mission teams come, for many the only treatment option is extraction of the decayed teeth. This is difficult to see in anyone, but it is especially heartbreaking to see in children.
The Sea Star Foundation obtained its 501(c)3 status in June of 2008.
The Need is Great:
We are often asked; “Can you really make a difference?”. The need is great and the workers are few, but to the people we are able to treat, we can make a tremendous difference in the quality of their lives. The Sea Star story illustrates this beautifully:
The Story of the Sea Star:
There’s a story often told of a particularly rough storm that came up one night and left a sandy beach strewn with sea stars. The next morning, a child walked along the seashore, stopping every few feet to pick up a sea star and fling it back to sea. An old man watched the child and finally shouted at him, “Why bother, son! There are too many sea stars to make a difference!”
With that, the boy picked up another sea star and looked at it intently before heaving it out to sea. Then turning to the old man, he said, “It makes a difference to this one.”
Won’t You Help?
As proponents of prevention, our goal is to provide a means for many dental professionals to participate in preventive care throughout the world. T
