Born in South Africa, I grew up in the "small town" Gold Mining community, outside Johannesburg with my family (two brothers and one sister). My father worked in the administration offices (finance), so he never worked underground (dangerous work) and my mother ran our home.
Our family tree dates back to 1731 in South Africa, when Andreas Dercksen settled in the Cape of Good Hope. We have many family stories about "wild Africa" which include my mother's lion cub pets, a leopard in our living room, giant spiders landing on guests, a python in our bathroom, baboons stealing our fruit from the kitchen and more.
I matriculated in December 1989 and left immediately for the south of France to learn the culture as well as the language. I made friends who I still connect with today and this was when the travel bug bit me... I have to date, travelled the world, both for business and vacation, visiting more than 30 countries.
Upon my return from France, I joined the real estate industry and qualified as a salesperson. Then I did compulsory military service. During my time in the military, I did an officers course and received the ranking of 2nd Lieutenant as well as an Ensign of the Navy (another story to tell here).
I took a bet in the military with friends, to run and complete an ultra marathon, having never been a long-distance runner. This 97km race was the longest of its kind in the world at the time. I only had three weeks to prepare, but my mind was strong. Finishing this race was one of the greatest achievements of my life and I achieved it in 10 hours, 45 minutes and 15 seconds - cut off time was 11 hours.
My career began in residential sales and it was the best foundation I could have received. I built my knowledge around all aspects of people, the management of time and money. These three factors have served me well my entire life and I now coach internationally on the subjects.
