|About||Shields Health Care Group scans more patients in Massachusetts than does any hospital or health care provider. A family-owned and -operated business, Shields was New England’s first independent MRI provider 25 years ago.|
|Mission||To leverage ingenuity and integrity to bridge technology, medicine and human need.|
Today, Shields has more than 25 American College of Radiology (ACR)-accredited locations throughout Massachusetts and strong partnerships with some of the top health care and technology providers in the country. Shields provides a diverse offering of MRI, radiation oncology (RO), CT and PET/CT imaging services. It is the Shields focus, experience and commitment that have helped the company grow to be the largest and most technically advanced network of diagnostic imaging facilities and the largest network of RO treatment centers in New England. Shields is proud to be the official MRI provider to the New England Patriots, the Boston Celtics, the New England Revolution and the Boston Bruins. www.shields.com
One in every four patients in Massachusetts chooses Shields for an MRI, including former linebacker Tedy Bruschi and professional athletes from the Patriots, Celtics, Revolution and Bruins. Shields is New England’s largest and most advanced provider of diagnostic imaging. Using the very latest in imaging technology, our team of radiologists read more MRI, PET/CT and CT scans than does any hospital in Massachusetts. Our specialized RO team has treated more than 10,000 patients at our four centers. Our 29 convenient locations are accredited by the ACR, certifying the very highest quality and safety standards.

MRI – Magnetic resonance imaging uses a magnetic field and radio wave pulses to see internal structures and what is going on around them (e.g., fluid, abnormalities, disease, injury).
Large-bore “open” MRI: Our large-bore MRIs accommodate patients up to 550 pounds and help reduce anxiety and claustrophobia, with magnet strength that ensures the highest level of detail for physicians.
3T MRI: This state-of-the-art “open” machine is the newest in MRI technology with magnet strength twice the level of an average MRI. With a large, open-bore design, the 3T accommodates patients of any size (up to 550 pounds) and helps reduce anxiety and claustrophobia.
CT – A computerized axial tomography scan is an X-ray procedure that combines many X-ray images with the aid of a computer to generate cross-sectional views and 3-D images of internal organs and structures. CT scans are best used for imaging the chest, abdomen and pelvis.
PET/CT – Positron emission tomography is a specialized imaging technique that uses short-lived radioactive substances to produce 3-D colored images of those substances functioning within the body. Combined with CT scans this imaging is the most advanced medical imaging technology available today. It is used for detecting and pinpointing disease early on (cancer diagnosis and treatment, heart disease, brain disorders, etc.).
Radiation oncology – A localized radiation treatment for cancer that affects only cancer cells in the area being treated. The cancers Shields most commonly treats are breast, prostate, lung, colon/rectal and skin.
