|About||SPX: The Small Press Expo | September 16-17, 2017|
The Small Press Expo serves as a platform to promote and preserve the independent comics art form while raising funds to protect the artists right to create them.
Profits from SPX go to support a variety of charitable programs. SPX makes an annual contribution to The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, which defends the First Amendment rights of the comics community.
SPX also endows public library systems with funds to purchase graphic novels at premium prices from our participating independent publishers. This library gift program has placed thousands of graphic novels in public libraries in the Washington, DC and Baltimore metro areas.
SPX also maintains a permanent collection at the Library of Congress, collecting and preserving the work of independent comic artists and also preserving the institutional records and ephemera of the Small Press Expo.
The Small Press Expo is the premier showcase for the exhibition of independent comic books and the discovery of new creative talent. SPX brings together over 300 artists and publishers to meet their readers, booksellers, distributors, and each other.
SPX also hosts the annual Ignatz Awards, a festival prize that recognizes outstanding achievement in comics, cartooning and graphic novels. The ballot is created by a panel of five cartoonists and is then voted on by the attendees at the event.
