This is the official page of the Tennessee Military Department, Tennessee Army National Guard, and Tennessee Air National Guard. It is controlled by the Tennessee Joint Public Affairs Office.
The Tennessee National Guard has a two-fold mission. Our State Mission is to provide the Governor of Tennessee with units capable of performing missions in accordance with the Tennessee Emergency Response Plan. Our Federal Mission is to provide the President & the Secretary of Defense with units capable of performing their wartime mission.
The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) is the agency of state government responsible for managing the state's response to emergencies and disasters that affect the citizens of Tennessee and/or its local governments.
During non-emergency periods, TEMA is under the administrative control of the Adjutant General. During emergencies the Director reports directly to the Governor and coordinates with the Adjutant General.
The purpose of the Tennessee State Guard is to provide a professional complement of personnel to support the State mission of the Federal homeland security requirements, by assisting the Tennessee Army National Guard as a force multiplier, and at the direction of the Adjuntant General, to assist civil authorities with disaster relief, humanitarian causes, ceremonial service, religious and medical support for the promotion of the well being and safety of the citizenry of Tennessee.
