The Diploma in Marine and Freshwater Studies cover
Mission Putting KAI back into KAIMOANA!
The Diploma in Iwi Marine and Freshwater Studies embraces kaitiakitanga through the study of all forms of life from the mountains to the oceans.

It covers a range of topics relevant to environmentalists, from traditional and commercial fisheries knowledge through to developing fisheries management plans and aquaculture initiatives.

This Diploma’s key point of difference is the applied mahinga kai practicum module which empowers students with the skills and experience to research and survey their iconic species and environment.

Through noho marae and directed study, students will undertake scientific stock assessments of a marine and a freshwater species.

The baseline findings are then interpreted and culminate in a report that can be used to underpin localised fisheries plans for the restoration and sustainable utilisation of natural resources for today and future generations.
