The Day School was established as a mission of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in 1949. The school is an intimate and cohesive community serving children and families within and beyond the congregation. Children here represent a range of ethnic, economic, religious backgrounds and family configurations. We believe high quality early childhood education invites genuine partnership between the home and the school, based on a mutual desire to support the child, who is at the center of everything we do. The care and education of young children requires a dynamic mixture of human relationships and thoughtful planning. Relationships are central to an MAPCDS education and lay the foundation for a successful first school experience.
Our program is designed to enhance children’s social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and physical development. We recognize and celebrate each child’s unique gifts, abilities and learning styles and nurture them to their fullest potential. We welcome children’s natural inclination to play and craft curriculum to meet their specific interests. Each classroom is intentionally arranged with open-ended materials which spark curiosity and wonder and create natural opportunities for critical thinking and collaboration. Teachers skillfully facilitate developmentally appropriate problem solving and discussions which encourage questioning, listening, perspective taking, and empathy development. The children in our care experiment with ideas and take appropriate risk as they work to develop their understanding of themselves and the world.
