The Story of The Sharon Springs Granola Company
In 2013 my husband Curt and I bought our home in the Village of Sharon Springs. We love our life here in this charming, quirky Village and cherish the friends that we have made. Unfortunately, seven months after buying our home, I lost my job and had no luck finding another. A friend suggested I make something that I could sell, and my first response was, “I cannot make anything.” I am neither crafty nor clever in this regard. However, I can cook.
Years ago, when my children were little, I developed a granola recipe because I did not like the cereal offerings in the grocery stores. So, my children grew up on this granola (now the Pure & Simple flavor), and it has always been our family’s granola. Curt suggested we try store-bought granola to see how it compared. I went to two food co-ops, a very well-known national chain food store, and two national supermarkets and bought every brand of granola on their shelves. We ate granola three times a day for a month and came to the conclusion that we liked mine better, much better!
Samples of the granola went out to friends near and far for feedback and suggestions on make-up and possible other flavors. Taking those suggestions in hand (and very grateful for them!), The Sharon Springs Granola Company was born. It was debuted at the 2017 Harvest Festival in Sharon Springs. The reception was much greater than I had hoped: We sold over 250 pounds of granola (completely selling out of the Clausen Farm Blend and HarvestFest) and 48 dozen cookies made from the granola. I am humbled and grateful that folks appear to like it a lot and want more. As a way of giving back to this community we love, a percentage of our profits from each bag sold go to support the Sharon Joint Youth Commission in Sharon Springs.
We make seven flavors of our granola using all organic ingredients. Each flavor contains: Thick-cut rolled oats, Unsalted butter, Light brown sugar, Madagascar vanilla extract, Sunflower seeds, Village of Sharon Springs water, Pumpkin seeds, Non-iodized sea salt & Wheat bran flakes.
The individual flavors add the following ingredients to the basic ingredients, above.
