The TRF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to saving Thoroughbred horses no longer able to compete on the racetrack from possible neglect, abuse, and slaughter.
To save Thoroughbred horses no longer able to compete on the racetrack from possible neglect, abuse and slaughter.
Our first farm opened in 1983 at a correctional facility in New York, where inmates participated in a nationally accredited TRF Second Chances vocational training program in equine care and stable management.
The TRF Second Chances program has since expanded to 9 states and provides an important "job" for horses whose racing-related injuries leave them unsuitable for a second career as a riding horse. The inmates learn marketable skills as well as invaluable lessons in compassion and responsibility. TRF also offers permanent retirement at 16 private farms around the country.
Our founder, Monique Koehler, received a 2009 Eclipse Award for her work with the TRF.
