96! That’s the number of African elephants that will die in the next 24 hours. Every day that passes means that more elephants are dying – over 30,000 a year. Since 2011, more than 100,000 African elephants were killed by poachers to satisfy the alarming international demand for ivory. At this rate, scientist indicate that the African elephant may become extinct in our lifetime.
This is not just an African problem!
It is a sad fact that our nation (U.S.) ranks second as the largest ivory importer in the world. Growing demand in China continues to drive the impoverished people in Africa to take the criminal risk of killing more elephants every day – just for their ivory tusks.
Immediate action is necessary!
We all know what the African Elephant represents to us. It has been our beloved mascot for more than 80 years at the University of Alabama. But soon, we may be the only major university with an extinct animal for a mascot.
Time is running out!
But we can do something. We can use our university mascot, combined with our considerable intellectual and social capital to raise awareness about poaching and support conservation efforts for the African elephant. Care. Share Give!
Its only with the conscientious support of friends like you – who believe deeply in protecting a keystone species like the African elephant – that we can become a part of the solution and save a majestic creature for future generations.
