|Mission||The Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities/La Société pour l'Étude de l'Égypte Ancienne is a Toronto-based non-profit organization founded to stimulate interest in Egyptology, to assist those interested, professional and non-professional alike, with research and training in the field. The Toronto Chapter of the SSEA fulfills its mandate by offering lectures and non-credit "mini-courses" and symposia which are open to both its members and the general public.|
As part of the Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities, SSEA-Toronto Chapter is responsible for all Toronto and area programming including the Mini-Lecture and Lecture Series and other special members’ events and social activities.
The Toronto Chapter currently runs 2 lecture series per year.
The Public Lecture Series in which well-known Egyptologists from around the world present to the Chapters members. It also fosters advanced graduate students who present their research to SSEA members.
The Summer Lecture Series runs from May to August, with local Egyptologists speak on popular topics chosen by the membership. SSEA Toronto also runs "mini-courses" and a mult-disciplinary mini-symposium.
The most lectures are free of charge and open to all. There is a small charge to non-members to attend the summer lectures, and certain selected public lectures. Most events include refreshments and a draw for a prize. The courses are run at a reduced cost to members and students: $125 general public; $100 members; $50 students.
The Toronto Chapter also organizes social events such as movie nights and an Annual New Year's Party.
SSEA-Toronto has also offered travel grants and scholarships to students who wish to do research in Egypt.
