Mission We have two main goals: (1) to evaluate, train, and permanently re-home dogs with a high risk of death in local shelters (2) to educate about and advocate for rescue dogs.
Description Tough Love Pit Bull Rescue is a small network of foster homes and canine advocates incorporated as a non-profit, with foster homes in Washington state, and owner retention services (spay/neuter, medical assistance, etc) available in Arizona and Washington. As per our name, we focus on rescuing dogs labeled as "pit bulls" in shelters, but we occasionally have other types of dogs up for adoption as well. We limit the number of dogs in our care so we have considerable time to devote to socializing, training, and evaluating behavior. Every single dog in our program is a a respected individual and each of our carefully selected foster homes honors this philosophy.

As a general rule, Tough Love dogs are trained in basic commands (and many learn advanced obedience work as well) and potty trained (some exceptions for puppies of course). Each dog is treated as a member of our families and it is our experience that this treatment smooths the transition of our dogs into their new families. Every dog in our program is thoroughly temperament tested and exposed to as many new social situations as possible, considering the individual capacity and comfort level of each dog . We will not adopt out a dog that we feel is incapable of living safely in our community.

Because we care deeply about the individual dogs in our program and the individual families applying to adopt, we require each applicant to fill out an application, participate in an interview, and open their home to our inspection. We then conduct a follow-up home visit about a week after adoption.

The well-being of each dog is our number-one priority. That being said, we understand the critical importance of the people involved with the rescue process -- both prospective adopters and volunteers. We work hard to make this experience a pleasant one for all beings involved.

Apart from our adoption program, Tough Love specializes in canine advocacy, working with governments, animal shelters, and communities to promote
