Description

Receiving high marks for affordable housing, good neighbors, green space and A-plus schools from Family Circle Magazine in 2009 as part of their annual feature “Best Places For Families,” Indian Trail is located just 15 miles southeast of Charlotte. While preserving its historic charm, Indian Trail welcomes and promotes new businesses and entertainment venues to help better serve its ever-growing residential population by striving to provide the best of both worlds: big city amenities with a small-town feel.

Indian Trail, incorporated in 1907, can trace its beginnings to the 1750’s and the establishment of a trade route between Virginia and the Waxhaw Indian settlement. The economy evolved from a trading and gold mining community to an agriculture and transportation hub with the development of the railroad in the 1870’s. Since the suburban trend emerged in the 1950’s and 1960’s Indian Trail has experienced huge residential growth. According to the 2010 Census reports the population has grown from less than 2,000 people in 1990 to more than 33,500 today.

Much like 50 years ago, Indian Trail is at an exciting crossroads of development. Town of Indian Trail staff and elected officials work in partnership with local civic organizations and community businesses to foster orderly growth and instill community pride by offering a variety of activities including festivals, events and concerts throughout in Crossing Paths Park, the new events park that opened earlier this year. The Town of Indian Trail’s newly created Community and Economic Development department works to engage local businesses, town and community leaders, and the recently established Union County Chamber of Commerce, Indian Trail office to chart an economic course for this new economy.
