We live in an increasingly interdependent world. Today, more than ever, knowledge of another language is essential.
The Department of Languages & Literatures offers undergraduate majors and minors in French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish, as well as minors in Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese and Latin and electives in Arabic and Greek.
Students learn in dynamic, interactive classes taught by accomplished teachers and scholars, from beginning language acquisition to in-depth content courses that promote critical thought and explore the complex and diverse histories, cultures, literatures and film of the countries in which each language is spoken. Course offerings are complemented by opportunities for original, undergraduate research under the guidance of faculty experts in a variety of regional, linguistic, and cultural areas, as well as engaging extracurricular workshops, lectures by visiting international scholars and film presentations.
