The Pool is Australia's exhibition for the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by Aileen Sage and Michelle Tabet
The Australian Institute of Architects exists to advance the interests of members, their professional standards and contemporary practice, and expand and advocate the value of architects and architecture to the sustainable growth of our community, economy and culture.
The Australian Institute of Architects is a national body consisting of almost 11,000 members across Australia and overseas. The Institute was formed in 1930 when state architectural Institutes combined to form a unified national association.
The Pool is a lens through which to explore Australian cultural identity. Be they natural or manmade, inland or coastal, temporary or permanent, the creative directors will invite visitors to the new DCM designed pavilion to explore the pools of Australia in all their forms. From pools of necessity to the pools of excess, the pool is a key architectural device, a memory and also a setting. It has the unique ability to evoke both the sacred and the profane. It also aptly represents a distinctively Australian democratic and social space – a great leveller of difference.
