Welfare Rights Initiative is a nonprofit organization located at Hunter College. LIKE us if you support access to higher education! Education is a RIGHT, not a privilege!
Welfare Rights Initiative (WRI) is a grassroots student activist and community leadership training organization, located at Hunter College, City University of New York. WRI organizes people with firsthand experience of poverty to create and defend fair and just policies. WRI exemplifies a democratic and inclusive process in its work to create economic stability, empowerment and dignity for all families. We believe families receiving welfare should not have to choose between their survival and a chance to lift themselves and their children to higher ground through higher education.
WRI's educational, legal, social service, and advocacy programs help students to become informed about local, state, and federal anti-poverty, social welfare and higher education policies; provide students with the opportunity to participate in organizing and leadership development activities; and facilitate their interaction
with faculty, community advocates, activists, service providers, and policy makers.
