Ian Willsmore is unashamedly old fashioned in his approach to his business.
The key work is “Service" and although he could make his agency sound thoroughly modern by employing phrases such as "cornering a niche market" or "being customer focused", truth is he runs a real estate agency that specialises in Strata & Property Management.
But while Willsmore Paterson, at 162 Grange Road, Flinders Park, has a decidedly old fashion appeal to it, its origins may well have been regarded as scandalous. Way back in 1949, the young Elizabeth Paterson launched her real estate practice in what would have been a very daring move for the time - a single woman opening her own agency!
A few years later Elizabeth teamed up with Ian's dad, Glen Willsmore, to create Willsmore Paterson. Ian joined the firm straight from University where he had been undertaking an economics degree, and while using his height to great advantage in the ruck for at SANFL club North Adelaide where he shared field time with the great Barrie Robran, he has, over the years maintained the ethos of Willsmore Paterson as a company that cares.
The secret to his company's longevity and success in a highly competitive industry is that he continues to do what others have abandoned. He has chosen to keep Willsmore Paterson small, refused to franchise it and concentrate in areas that others find “too difficult”.
The company has an enviable reputation not only as a property manager but more specifically as a strata manager where you need Wisdom of Solomon and the patience of Job to successfully execute the job description of mediation, negotiation “and mothering” adds Ian dryly.
The formula has proven itself with the company’s strata base covering more then 140 Strata Groups, representing of more then 1000 units from locations as far apart as Reynella in the south to Modbury in the north.
