In 1990, transplanted New Yorker and recent Berklee College of Music graduate, Ken Cmar, wanted to record bands from his new home city of Boston, MA.
Originally called Summit Records, Cmar used the label to promote his studio projects, namely Stompbox, Honkeyball, and 6L6. Most bands took him up on his offer, thinking, "Yea, let's work with this guy! He's offering to not only produce us, but press our tape, and get it into local stores!"
In 1995, the name of the label was changed to Wonderdrug Records as to not be confused with a Summit Records from Tempe, AZ and by this time, the label had taken off.
Many of the bands became very popular. Cmar quit his day job to concentrate on the label full time and the roster included such classic heavy Boston bands as TREE, Honkeyball, Sam Black Church, and Scissorfight.
Wonderdrug branched out into regional distribution and before long, became a thriving boutique label and music distribution company specializing in New England based hardcore, metal and punk. Staind, Godsmack, Powerman 5000, Shadows Fall, Unearth and many more were part of this burgeoning Boston Rock scene.
Wanting to support the local scene further, the label also began to help bands press their own CDs and DVDs. Even if you weren't signed to the actual label, Wonderdrug became your one stop shop for making your own record, with distribution for those that qualified.
In the 21st century we saw the music industry change to the point where record sales declined dramatically. Currently, Wonderdrug is not signing acts and remains helping local and regional bands with CD and DVD Manufacturing as well as digital distribution.
Wonderdrug Records is still the one stop shop for band services.
