A. TAEKWONDO PROGRAM OF TRAINING
The standard method of Taekwondo training usually comprises three (3) categories: poomse or forms, sparring and drilling/breaking.
Poomse is the basic position and movement for both attack and defense. Pre-arranged lines of various forms and stances have been prepared to enable the student to develop balance and coordination of movements. There are two sets of poomse or forms: Palgue and Taeguk. Each set comprises of eight (8) forms which are mastered as the student advances in proficiency and level.
Sparring is a part of Taekwondo where the attack and defense techniques are consolidated and applied against an opponent. Sparring is classified into pre-arranged, free, competition and special sparring.
Drilling is a process wherein power, concentration and speed are developed through repetition of basic movements and techniques. On some occasions, students may be asked to demonstrate the development of their skills by breaking inanimate objects such as bricks, tiles and wooden planks.
Another opportunity for the demonstration of developed skills is in competition. Locally, annual national competitions, inter-school championships and annual meets are regularly held. Competition may be in the form of free sparring or execution of forms. From these competitions, the members of the national delegation to the Asian and World Taekwondo Championships as well as other international meets are selected.
