Youth Futures cover
Mission The Mission of Youth Futures is to provide safe shelter, collaborative resources, diverse support, and respectful guidance to homeless, unaccompanied, runaway and at-risk youth in Northern and Southern Utah.
Description It is estimated that approximately 5000 youth a year experience homelessness. OUTreach Resource Centers serves approximately 800 youth a year and The Homeless Youth Resource Center in SLC serves 944 individuals a year.

Even amidst these staggering numbers, there was still no youth shelter. These resource centers provide youth a sleeping bag, a tent and food; they have had no other choice but to send them out to sleep on the streets, because they have no shelter facilities.

Let me introduce myself, my name is Kristen Mitchell. I have been working as Executive Director for a hotline providing Empathy, Support and Resources for the LGBT community while I've been going to school to get my social work degree. I volunteer at OUTreach Resource Centers, where I work directly with youth experiencing homelessness. While some of my work has been with the LGBT community, my heart goes out to all youth; I don't want any youth to experience homelessness.
As I've worked on the hotline answering calls about kids getting kicked out of their homes and/or who have found themselves on the streets, I have had no resources to provide them with places to go. It breaks my heart to do nothing. I decided several years ago that my goal would be to open a shelter for these homeless youth, but I found out that I couldn't, because until this last legislative session people like me were prohibited from sheltering a youth because it was considered "Harboring a minor." HB132: Temporary Homeless Youth Shelter Amendments, changed this law to allow for facilities to open to shelter these homeless kids.

Update: Youth Futures Shelter Home is now open to accept youth.
