Bree Newsome is a contemporary civil rights icon who first garnered national attention for her daring act of peaceful disobedience in June 2015. Following the brutal murder of nine black parishioners at Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, S.C., Bree climbed the flagpole at the South Carolina statehouse and pulled down the Confederate flag as a protest against racist symbolism.

To kick off the Columbus International Film & Animation Festival, she’ll discuss that life-changing event and how to make exciting work that aligns activism with art.

As an accomplished filmmaker and musician, Bree skillfully outlines the relationship between activism and art, and captivates audiences as she describes in cinematic detail the heroic gestures of ordinary people on the front lines of activism.

Join us to hear her impassioned message about racial equality and discussion on how, with courage, zeal and the support of others, ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference.

This presentation is part of Art. Design. Values., a new event series hosted by CCAD President Melanie Corn. By teaching our four core values — Inspiration, Respect, Positivity, and Accountability — CCAD transforms students into artists and designers with the power to change culture and commerce. This series features speakers who live those values every day.
