'Loving Vincent' is a stunning, fully painted animated feature, starring Douglas Booth and Oscar-nominated Saoirse Ronan

The film, the world’s first oil-painted animation explores the life and mysterious, controversial death of Vincent Van Gogh, told by his paintings and by the characters that inhabit them. The intrigue unfolds through interviews with the characters closest to Vincent and through dramatic reconstructions of the events leading up to his death.

Hand painted in oils by around 100 artists, this distinctive animation draws inspiration from the feverish paintings of Vincent Van Gogh to explore the nature of his death. The story is set one year after the troubled painter passes away, from a gunshot wound to his stomach.
Armand Roulin (Douglas Booth), an occasional model for the artist and the son of postman Joseph (Chris O’Dowd) has been charged by his father to take an undelivered letter from Van Gogh to his brother Theo. Initially unenthusiastic, Roulin plunges into a personal odyssey through which he tries to unpick the details surrounding the death of the “father of modern art”.

“The fact that every frame of Loving Vincent was oil-painted, in a process that took six years, would be remarkable enough in itself. But painted to look exactly like the work of Vincent Van Gogh? That’s something else.... Corn fields shimmer and rustle with slight flickers of the impasto. The night sky sparkles and swirls. And faces – even the recognisable ones of a noted British cast – pose for a set of portraits that are rarely short of captivating. “ Tim Robey, The Telegraph
