Dubbed Canada's "Reggae Warriors," House of David Gang is an authentic reggae band that delivers late 70s and early 80s-style Jamaican reggae originals; mixed with folk, soul, calypso, afrobeat and hip-hop influences. Based in Toronto and fronted by vocalist King Selah and drummer Jahlin Edwards with guitarists Terell Jarvis & Jay Cleary. bassist Jo John and keyboardists Dezi Fingazz & Sam Weller rounding out the modern incarnation of The Gang. The band takes its name from the House of David, an after-hours spot that was a hotspot for artists from the Toronto's burgeoning Rastafarian and reggae community from the late 80’s until the mid-90’s.
After the House of David club was shut down by police in 1998, lead singer King Selah travelled to Jamaican to complete album produced by Ervin "Allah" Lloyd of the band Chalice at Anchor Studios in Kingston which was self released in 2003, receiving mostly airplay in Jamaica. This was followed by a quiet period of the band, only reforming for the band's Peter Tosh Tribute. The band reformed in 2007 and built a cult like following touring to clubs and festivals. In 2012, with the support of Ontario Arts Council and Factor grants House of David Gang worked with producer Snappy Homefry's Playhouse Studio to complete a full length album "Reggae Warrior" released on New York City label NuFunk Records. The release received significant national and international airplay and the title track was remixed by DJ Stickybuds and Ed Solo and released in 2013 as a 12 inch vinyl single by UK Hot Cakes Records and was one the top selling drum & bass track of 2013 and played on BBC Radio 1. The success of the remix garnered further interest by by remix producers all over the world resulting in the companion album "Reggae Warrior Remixed" released in 2016 by Nufunk Records.
House of David Gang has performed in front of enthusiastic crowds at top Canadian festivals the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival, Hillside Festival, Atlantic Jazz Festival, Beaches Jazz Festival, Toronto Festival of Beer, Ottawa Reggae Festival, Word On The Street, Irie Music Festival, Canada 150 Celebrations and more. After finishing their extensive two month Western Canadian tour in 2016, the band is now focused on writing and recording new material, working on their new album “Slum” at Slamm Productions with veteran producer/keyboardist in Toronto with the support of an Ontario Arts Council Grant, scheduled to be released mid-2018. While keeping their classic reggae foundation, the direction and feel of the album maintained its roots as well as experimenting with new elements and sounds. The band has also collaborated with Vancouver artist Gisto on a new track "Good Vibration," video and remix package to keep building on the band's success in the world of electronica to be released in the near future..
With their new album “Slum” and new remix package and documentary in the works, House of David Gang is definitely a band to watch out for in 2018.
