The classes are taught by Certified Master DanceAbility Teacher Jana Meszaros, a choreographer, dancer and movement educator with a BA in Dance from the University of Oregon. She says this of the classes: "Participants explore shapes, movement, and togetherness in a supportive and inventive environment."
Jana guides participants through dance and movement exercises and explorations that build camaraderie, physical awareness and expressive capabilities. The DanceAbility method always ensures that nobody is isolated, regardless of abilities or disabilities.
For the youth classes, non-disabled siblings of participants with disabilities are encouraged and welcome to join. For adult classes, people without disabilities who are interested in the magical experience of connecting through creative movement and the study of improvisation are encouraged and welcome to attend, alongside those with disabilities.
Classes are $80 for a 9-week session. Full and partial scholarships are available to all who need them, and nobody will be turned away due to financial hardship. Drop-ins ($10 per class or by donation) are welcome too.
Here are some comments from our participants:
–"My teen with disabilities was hesitant- she loves to dance, but was self-conscious about her CP [cerebral palsy]. This class empowered her sense of self, and she added a dance class at high school this term!"
–"This was a very inclusive, respectful and open-minded class that encouraged me to understand the challenges that come with disabilities, and created a safe space for artistic expression."
