Opis
Northwich lies in the heart of the Cheshire plain, and has been settled since at least Roman times, when it was considered of importance due to the area’s salt brines and strategic river crossing. Salt mining has played a large part in the history of the area, unfortunately also contributing to large amounts of subsidence, however mine stabilisation work was completed in 2007. The -wich part of the town’s name comes from the Norse -wic, meaning ‘bay’ and refers to the traditional method of obtaining salt by evaporating sea water.
