SDC supports Bhutan in its democratic development and fosters Swiss-Bhutanese bilateral cooperation.
The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation in Bhutan seeks to contribute to the Royal Government’s Five-Year Plan Goal of “engendering a truly representative, responsible and meaningful democracy”. Specific areas of cooperation focus on strengthening public institution, fostering civil society and civic participation, local governance and community forestry development.
SDC is the international cooperation agency of the Government of Switzerland under the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. In September 2012, SDC opened a Swiss Cooperation Programme Office in Thimphu. Bilateral relations of the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Swiss Confederation date back to the 1970s, and cooperation projects have addressed rural infrastructure development, agriculture and forestry, education, health, rural enterprises, environment, cultural expression and more recently democratic governance.
