“Re-imagining Criminal Justice, from Guatemala to Monterey County", featuring Barby Ulmer and Tom Lee

7pm - 9 pm -Doors open 6:30 pm

The Mayan Restorative Justice system is based on the spirit of community. After the restorative justice processes are finished, there is nothing denied the perpetrator. Mayans all over Guatemala have for decades tried unsuccessfully to get this system of justice incorporated into the constitution. Tom Lee will discuss the work done locally by the Restorative Justice Partners group, whose work focuses on “building relationships so that when a harm has occurred, participants are ready to make agreements based on behavioral expectations and respect.

Saratoga resident Barby Ulmer has led Reality Ecotours to Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Cuba, Burma, and other developing nations. With her (late) husband Vic, she founded and co-directed the non-profit "our developing world (ODW)", an organization striving to raise awareness of the struggles and triumphs occurring in developing countries.

Tom Lee is a consultant for the nonprofit Monterey County Restorative Justice Partners Inc. and is a member of the local Veterans for Peace Chapter 46 and Peace Coalition of Monterey County. He will discuss two programs: the Victim/Offender Program (VORP) and Victim Impact Program (VIP).

Co-sponsored by the Monterey Peace and Justice Center
and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, Monterey County Branch.
