Beyond Myself curates visual images produced through participatory arts-based workshops with Filipino migrants in London and Hong Kong led by the Curating Development programme of Goldsmiths, University of London. The workshops were organized in conjunction with local project partners: Enrich in Hong Kong, Kanlungan Filipino Consortium and Filipino Domestic Workers Association in London.

There are currently 370,000 migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong, 190,000 of whom are from the Philippines. They are an integral part of our lives, caring for our homes, children and elderly. However they rarely get to tell their stories; stories of hardship, sacrifice, struggle, empowerment or achievement. Beyond Myself makes these experiences visible by exploring the contributions and sacrifices of Filipino domestic workers through language, images and objects that are produced in their daily lives. The exhibition also identifies the major obstacles they face in converting the fruits of their effort into economic benefits and investment for themselves and their families.

The exhibition additionally features artwork and films by award-winning Filipino artist Nathalie Dagmang, Hong Kong-based domestic worker artist collective Guhit Kulay, and rights organization Voices of Women Media (VOW Media).

Beyond Myself is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, UK, with additional contributions from the British Academy project Big Data, Live Methods and Surveillance Subjectivities. The exhibition has also been supported by Scalabrini Migration Center, The University of Hong Kong - HKU - 香港大學’s Department of Sociology, and Keele University.

Enrich HK is the leading Hong Kong charity promoting the economic empowerment of migrant domestic workers. We empower migrant domestic workers to invest in themselves through financial and empowerment education. Our workshops equip migrant domestic workers with the tools to save, budget, and plan for greater financial security.
