|О нас||El Manzano (Dulce Nombre de María, Chalatenango) is an Eco tourism lodge and campground located in the northwestern mountains of El Salvador.|
The community of El Manzano in the municipio of Dulce Nombre de María, department of Chalatenango, was officially formed by a Peace Accords-based land grant to 23 former guerrilla families who defended the area during Salvadoran civil war (1979-92). its rugged, forested mountains provided refuge for guerrilla fighters that used its peaks to defend against areal attacks and caves for protecting families and the injured. Several battles were fought in the area. Unlike many guerrilla contingents whose members went their separate ways after the war, El Manzano remained unified and with the leadership of linguist Consuelo Roque formed an ecotourism lodge and campground in 2001 as both a means of income and preserving the surrounding woodland forest.
The lodge offers several attractions. It is a welcome respite from heat of the valley with beautiful vistas of the Lempa River lake and beyond. Below the ecolodge lies 2 rock shelters with paintings likely dating to pre-agricultural times, and some archeological sites can be found in the mountains above. Four cascades with pools deep enough for bathing are located on the edge of the main settlement. Trails and guides offer mountain hiking trips from as little as an hour to a full day. Nina Consuelo's home has a collection of over 60 orchids from the surrounding mountains. 126 species of birds, including oropendulas that congregate in January, have been documented at the site, and 125 species of medical plants are found naturally there. A community museum provides a moving look at the community's tragic and heroic involvement in the civil war as well as artifacts dating to Classic Maya times. Legends abound of magnetic, curative, and spiritual forces at points around the site.
The lodge consists of 3 cabins with two rooms each, and each room having between 2-5 beds, and together sleeping a total of 15 comfortably for $10 per person. An additional bunkhouse with 3 rooms and 3 bathrooms that sleeps 18 can also be r
